Tuesday, 7.31.12 - Painting & Then Some

Sooooo our current dilemma is that we thought we were getting our microwave installed above our gas stove - however when you get a gas stove - you then by default have to get the 'alternate' layout which moves your microwave over to the side counter (see next pic below) - however they already installed an oversized cabinet which now has to be removed and replaced with a small one to allow room for a microwave :(  New code that rolled out a year ago states that there must be 30" clearance from the top of the gas stove to the bottom of a microwave - well my PM marked this with the white tape shown in the pic directly below. I went out there to gauge how high this would be with my height and it's just too darn high!  So unfortunately I'm bummed to say that we will have to have our microwave across the kitchen all by itself beside the referigerator. Not a happy camper.

Existing Tall Cabinet - soon to be removed :( to allow room for a microwave and have a short cabinet installed above it.

Screen door and handles installed on Sliding Door off of Morning Room

FINALLY! They installed/dry-walled our arch-way leading to the Guest Bathroom and Office. Clearly more work has to be done here to smooth it all out but still - it's a step closer :)

Front Door Gets Painted - Dark Navy to match shutters

Living Room - a random square hole that should have never got cut out gets patched up. Another boo-boo, oh the joys of building

Yay! My access panel in master closet that backs up to the master tub so I can add in a side hand-held shower in the future. My Project Manager was very nice & accomodating to have this installed.

Stairs banister gets 1st coat of Stain!  Looking good!

Basement Window - Finally UNVEILED!  We can see light!

Basement Walkout Door gets painted Navy Blue to match front color scheme

Front Door Entrance - Side Iron Rails installed!

  1. Looking very nice. I like the porch railings and door color!

  2. Wow, I have yet to see porch railings--it is so beautiful! Love it!

    1. BTW-when we first signed our purchase agreement we were told the gas range with OTR microwave was not a problem. Now the county is not passing the inspection so they are offering other choices. I did not want to loose my cabinet space so I opted to try the electric cooktop and if I don't like it I can switch to gas later without compromising on the cabinet space. It was a very stuff choice but I finally surrendered to the electric cooktop.

    2. Blah electric cook top. I struggled with the same decision but Gordan Ramsey said gas was the only way to go. We have an electric now and you don't have as much control over the heat but it works to cook your stuff. I love the over the range microwave but we had the same problem. So...we opted to go for the countertop microwave for now. Does anyone know why it's 30" for a gas? Fumes or something I guess.

    3. @ RickandNadase - That's unfortunate they mislead you in the beginning like us :( It came as a complete surprise but I really want to keep my gas stove (esp. if power goes out). We have an electric flat cooktop now and I'm not a big fan - many permanent scratches and marks that just don't come up - but again - that's a complete personal preference choice - thank goodness it's a rental we are in now :)

@Charissa - Still trying to find out myself why it increased to 30" - for more ventilation possibly and to allow for taller pots to fit which was a problem I've been reading. Here's a link I found: http://www.ehow.com/info_12168891_building-code-microwave-over-range.html
